Performer Notes
  • This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
  • Soulwax: Stephen (vocals); David (guitar, keyboards, loops); Inge (keyboards); Stefaan (bass); Stephane (drums).
  • Additional personnel: John Schmerzel (vocals); Jason Falkner (strings, Chamberlin); Steve Slingeneyer (drums).
  • Like Oasis, AC/DC, and the Kinks before them, Soulwax revolves around two brothers, guitarist David and singer Stephen DeWaele. Their debut album, MUCH AGAINST EVERYONE'S ADVICE, is a blend of rock stylings, cool dance beats, and traces of electronica. The title track is a perfect example of what the band is about, as it opens with a funky drum machine beat before rocking out with real drums and hard, crunching guitars. Other highlights include "Overweight Karate Kid," "Too Many DJ's," and the sort-of Jeff Buckley tribute called "The Salty Knowledge of Tears." F.Y.I.--the brothers are also a world-famous DJ duo, playing in clubs around the world as the Flying DeWaele brothers.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (11/12/99, p.83) - "...the studio-tanned Belgian brothers never waffle when it comes to songcraft....insidiously endearing [it's] good..." - Rating A-

Magnet (1-2/00, p.80) - "...combustible rock/beat hybridization....maintaining some sense of divine melody even in the face of stylistic tourism..."

CMJ (10/18/99, p.25) - "...This creative, dynamic, oftentimes lush affair is a treat for lovers of imaginative power pop..."

Melody Maker (4/4/00, p.55) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...One bloody clever album. And the cleverest people are always the most moving. Soulwax have an impossibly alluring knack at running hand-in-hand with both wit and beauty..."
