In all honesty, there's probably not a need for the "crazy" modifier in the title of Cherry Red's 2016 compilation 61 Classics from the Cramps' Crazy Collection. It's understood that the Cramps were weird and twisted but this double-disc set -- culled either from the personal collection of Lux Interior and Poison Ivy or songs played on Lux's radio show -- does make a virtue of midcentury oddness, favoring rockabilly, rock & roll, and R&B but also spending a little more time on easy listening exotica than some may expect. Some of this is legendary primitivism -- in obscuro circles, there's not a song as legendary as the closing "Paralyzed" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy -- but the fun of 61 Classics from the Cramps' Crazy Collection is how it can serve up a lot wonderful weirdness even to those who think they're fairly well versed in the byways of rock & roll culture. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
